How to get to Koh Tao Island?

Excellent public transport in the Kingdom of Thailand allows you to reach anywhere in Thailand easily. It is also easy to travel to nearby countries such as Malaysia, Laos, Burma, Cambodia. Chumphon town (mainland) is located at a distance of 450 km from Bangkok. It is also called the southern sea gate of Thailand. Koh Tao Island has located about 60 km from Chumphon. Approximately the same distance from Koh Tao are Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.

By land

You can choose from several options. The difference is mainly traveled time, price and level of comfort.
The most convenient, relatively cheap and often used is a bus trip from Bangkok to Chumphon. From there you get high-speed catamaran to Koh Tao island.
Lomprayah is a high-speed catamaran company which provides an excellent choice of price and quality. Their comfortable buses run the route from Bangkok to Chumphon twice a day. Buses leave from the Khao San Road office at 6 am and at 9 pm. The company’s high-speed, comfortable catamarans depart from Chumphon to Koh Tao and then further on to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui at 7:30 am and 12:30 pm.

It is also possible to get to the mainland city of Chumphon by train or by taxi.

By sea

Several companies provide sea transportation services between the islands of Koh Tao, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and the mainland cities such as Chumphon and Suratthani (Don Sak).

Lomprayah — high speed and comfortable catamarans.
SeatranDiscovery — slightly slower and slightly less comfortable.
Songserm — slow, but cheaper.
Also, Koh Tao can be reached by night boats from the cities of Chumphon and Suratthani. The ships are quite slow, the journey time is from 6 to 8 hours and the ticket price is about 350 THB. Night boats are equipped with sleeping beds.

By air

It is possible to reduce the travel time by taking advantage of a flight. The closest airports to Koh Tao are located on Koh Samui island, in Surathani and Chumphon towns.
The flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui takes about 1 hour, the cost is from 3 000 to 5 000 THB one way.
The budget flight option is to fly to Chumphon by Nokair. The cost of a one-way ticket starts from 1,500 THB. You can find the timetable and ticket booking info on the airline website
